Macy’s Store in Massachusetts Closing Along with Dozens Across the United States

A Macy’s location at the Kingston Collection shopping center is closing this year along with 65 other Macy’s stores in the U.S., the company revealed Thursday. The closures are a part of a new plan, called the Bold New Chapter strategy, that aims to promote sustainable and profitable sales growth by closing around 150 unproductive stores within three years and investing in 350 “go-forward” stores, according to a press release issued by Macy’s Inc.

All 66 locations will begin clearance sales this month that will run for approximately eight to 12 weeks, according to a customer FAQ page. Stores will officially close within the first quarter of 2025.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., in the statement.

The Kingston Macy’s website informs customers of the closure, advising them to either visit the Macy’s in Hanover Crossing mall — about 16 miles away — or check the store locator. There are 15 other Macy’s stores in Massachusetts.

Also a part of the Bold New Chapter strategy, Macy’s has invested in pilot stores that it said boosted sales in the last three quarters and increased customer satisfaction, according to the statement.

Impact on Local Community

The closure of the Macy’s store at the Kingston Collection shopping center will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the local community. This store has been a staple in the area for years, providing jobs and contributing to the local economy. Residents who rely on this store for their shopping needs will now have to find alternatives, potentially affecting their shopping habits and convenience.

Company’s Strategic Decision

Macy’s decision to close these underperforming stores is part of a larger strategic plan to revitalize the brand and focus on more profitable locations. By investing in their “go-forward” stores and pilot programs that have shown success, Macy’s is taking proactive steps to ensure long-term growth and sustainability in a competitive retail landscape.

Customer Options and Reactions

Customers who frequent the Kingston Macy’s store will now need to explore other options for their shopping needs, whether it be visiting alternative Macy’s locations or finding new retailers to fulfill their preferences. The closure of this store may evoke mixed reactions from loyal customers who have fond memories of shopping there over the years. It is essential for Macy’s to communicate this transition effectively to ensure customers are aware of their options and the reasons behind the closure.
