Protesters Blocked from Rhode Island State House Rotunda During Governor’s Address
More than 100 protesters were denied access to the Rhode Island State House rotunda on Tuesday evening as Governor Daniel McKee delivered his State of the State address. The demonstrators, organized by the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC, had planned a “Peoples State of the State Address” to demand action on the homelessness crisis prior to the governor’s speech.
Upon arrival, the protesters found the rotunda cordoned off with a sign indicating it was reserved for the governor’s address, blocking their entry. Additionally, television crews were barred from bringing cameras into the chamber during the speech. These actions raised concerns about free speech rights, with Steven Brown from the ACLU of Rhode Island highlighting the importance of public access to the State House.
Unprecedented Blockade Sparks Controversy
Harrison Tuttle, president of the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC, expressed dismay over the governor’s decision to restrict access to the rotunda, labeling it as unprecedented and a violation of First Amendment rights for unhoused residents. Tuttle criticized the move as an attempt to silence dissenting voices and control the narrative within the State House.
The empty rotunda during McKee’s speech, coupled with the ban on television cameras, prompted speculation about the transparency and openness of the governor’s administration. A spokesperson later attributed the camera ban to a miscommunication, further fueling the controversy surrounding the event.

Despite being blocked from the rotunda, protesters continued their demonstration on the first floor of the building, chanting and voicing their demands for meaningful action from the governor.
