A Rhode Island dude was found guilty on Monday of slaying a Boston cab driver in 2019 outside a Back Bay hotel. Phillip Foy, 40, of Pawtucket got convicted by a Suffolk County jury of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 60-year-old Luckinson Oruma of Dorchester. Oruma was cruising in his taxi on June 4, 2019, when he parked outside the Colonnade Hotel on Huntington Avenue. Foy hopped in the cab and requested a ride to Mansfield. When Oruma said no, Foy got out of the car, opened the driver’s side door, and attacked the 60-year-old. Foy whipped out a gun and shot Oruma, standing over him and blasting away at him multiple times when the Dorchester dude hit the ground. Then, the Pawtucket man drove the cab onto Ring Road, where he ditched the gun, kicked off his shoes, and chilled outside a Starbucks. Police came to the scene of the shooting around 10:58 a.m. and discovered Oruma. He got rushed to a local hospital, where they pronounced him dead. When cops pulled up on Ring Road, Foy grabbed a pedestrian and tried to shield himself before officers nabbed him. He admitted to shooting Oruma but said it was in self-defense.
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden stated, “The shooting death of Luckinson Oruma was shattering not just for his family and friends, but for anyone who goes to work each day expecting, as they should, to be in a safe environment.” Hayden added, “This dude turned Mr. Oruma’s environment into something tragically different, and I’m very grateful that the jury held him accountable for his devastating actions.” Foy is set to be sentenced on May 23. A first-degree murder conviction means a mandatory life sentence without the chance of parole.
