In the heart of Lynn, Massachusetts, a young athlete named Drew Karlovits is making waves in the world of high school hockey. Drew’s journey to success began at the tender age of 3 when he expressed a desire to become a goaltender. Initially met with skepticism from his parents, Peter and Heather, who hoped his interest would fade, Drew persisted. It wasn’t until he turned 6 that he finally got the chance to step onto the ice in goalie pads for the first time, sealing his love for the game.
Drew’s passion for hockey led him to BC High, where, at just 16 years old, he claimed the starting goaltender position as a freshman. His dedication to the sport is deeply intertwined with his father’s memory, who, unfortunately, lost his battle with ALS in 2019. Peter’s unwavering support and love for hockey have left an indelible mark on Drew, motivating him to push himself to new heights in his athletic pursuits.
The pivotal moment in Drew’s hockey career came last season when, after a rocky start, he was called upon by BC High coach John Flaherty to take the lead in the net. From that moment on, Drew never looked back, showcasing his talent and determination on the ice. This season, as a sophomore, he has truly shone, boasting an impressive .955 save percentage, a 1.33 goals against average, and five shutouts under his belt.
The recent game against Catholic Memorial showcased Drew’s exceptional skills as he made a remarkable 46 saves to secure a shutout victory. Following this stellar performance, he went on to achieve another shutout against St. Mary’s, solidifying his reputation as a formidable force in the world of high school hockey. Coach Flaherty commended Drew’s growth, noting his evolution from a talented goalie to a mature player who combines technical prowess with athleticism.
Drew’s competitive spirit is unmatched, as even a single goal against him in practice fuels his drive to be impenetrable on the ice. This fierce determination has not only earned him respect in the locker room but has also transformed into his personal mantra: Nothing gets past him. His leadership and camaraderie with his teammates have become pillars of strength, fostering a sense of brotherhood that propels the team forward.
Behind every successful athlete is a dedicated support system, and for Drew, that unwavering pillar of strength is his mother, Heather. Enduring long commutes to ensure Drew can pursue his passion for hockey and academics, Heather’s commitment is a testament to a mother’s love and sacrifice. Drew acknowledges her unwavering support, recognizing that no matter the outcome on the ice, his mother stands by his side.
As Drew Karlovits continues to make his mark in the world of high school hockey, his journey is a testament to resilience, dedication, and the power of family support. With each game, he honors his father’s memory, embodying the spirit of a true champion both on and off the ice.
