A former United States Postal Service clerk in Revere and Melrose, Michael Murray, 37, of Lynn, has recently pleaded guilty to charges of mail theft and theft of government money. This admission follows an indictment by a grand jury last year, with Murray set to be sentenced in February.
Series of Thefts Uncovered
During the period between April and July 2023, Murray abused his position to pilfer hundreds of pieces of mail entrusted to him at the Beach Street Post Office in Revere and the Melrose Post Office. The stolen items included gift cards, cash, and checks totaling $3,422. Additionally, Murray allegedly engaged in the theft and unauthorized creation of USPS money orders amounting to around $5,131 for his own benefit.
Potential Prison Time
As a consequence of his actions, Murray faces a potential sentence of up to five years for mail theft and up to 10 years for the theft of government funds. The guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of breaching the public’s trust and misusing one’s position for personal gain. Murray will have to wait until Feb. 3 for his sentencing, where the judge will determine the appropriate punishment for his crimes.
