The city is gearing up for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Cambridge KiOSK in Harvard Square happening next Friday, May 30 at 10 a.m. The iconic kiosk, which has been closed for over five years, will be reopening as a partnership between the Cambridge Office for Tourism and Somerville-based nonprofit CultureHouse. This landmark is set to become a “cultural incubator, community gathering space, and visitor information center,” according to the city.
The plans to revive the kiosk as a community space were first announced back in October of 2024. The grand reopening celebration will take place on May 30 from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring a ribbon cutting ceremony and live music. Additionally, the event will introduce the inaugural exhibit, titled “a pop-up newsstand celebrating Cambridge’s rich print media history,” inside the Cambridge KiOSK.
The historic kiosk, originally constructed as an entrance to the subway in 1927, has been a central element of Harvard Square for nearly a century. It transitioned into a newsstand in 1983 and has since been recognized as a National Register of Historic Places and a Cambridge Landmark. The rotating exhibit within the kiosk will pay tribute to its newsstand legacy, as per the city’s announcement.
