A Turkish national, Berkan Karamurtlu, 27, who legally entered the U.S. in 2021, has been detained following his arrest in Somerville for assault and witness intimidation charges, as announced by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on Wednesday. Karamurtlu is facing charges of assault and battery against a household member, witness intimidation, and assault and battery against a person with an intellectual disability.
Charges and Detention
ICE revealed that Karamurtlu lawfully arrived in the U.S. on October 11, 2021, through John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. However, the charges against him violate the terms of his admission to the country. He was initially arraigned in Somerville District Court on December 24, 2024, for assault and battery on an intellectually disabled person and witness intimidation. Despite ICE lodging an immigration detainer against him, the court released Karamurtlu from custody, leading to his subsequent re-arrest.
