Revamped Speeds Coming to MBTA Red and Orange Lines
In an effort to improve transit efficiency and passenger experience, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced plans to increase speeds on both the Red Line and Orange Line. Currently running at 40 mph, the Red and Orange lines will soon be restored to their original design speeds of 50 mph and 55 mph, respectively. This initiative comes as part of the MBTA’s ongoing efforts to remove speed restrictions across its transit system.
Enhancements and Challenges Ahead
Jody Ray, senior director for the T’s Maintenance of Way department, revealed that the Red Line’s speed will be raised to 50 mph in the next week or two. To facilitate this increase, the MBTA will conduct necessary maintenance work, including “vegetation control” to ensure that operators have clear visibility ahead as trains move at faster speeds. Ray emphasized that speed restrictions are temporary measures taken while repairs are being made, with the goal of ultimately restoring the lines to their optimal performance levels.

The MBTA has made significant strides in improving its infrastructure, with the replacement of 252,000 feet of rail completed, representing about 80% of the necessary upgrades. The department has also bolstered its workforce by adding 100 new staff members and three additional superintendents to support the maintenance and operational needs of the transit system.
