Man Charged with Online Threats Against Jewish People and Firearms Violations

Matthew Scouras, a 34-year-old man from Beverly, is facing serious charges related to firearms and online threats against Jewish people. Federal authorities alerted the police about Scouras’ alleged incitement of violence through online platforms like 4Chan, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.

Alleged Firearms Violations

Scouras is facing a total of 12 firearms charges, including possession of a firearm without a license, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a large capacity feeding device, improper storage of a firearm, and the making of a firearm without a serial number. The Beverly Police Department announced these charges on Monday, shedding light on the severity of the situation.

Threats Against Jewish People

In addition to the firearms charges, Scouras is also facing specific threat charges related to his comments about Jewish people on 4Chan. The FBI National Threat Operation Center reported Scouras’ disturbing posts to the Beverly police, prompting further investigation. His posts included derogatory slurs towards Jewish people and explicit threats of violence, particularly targeting synagogues.

Police Response and Investigation

When questioned about his posts and the firearms found in his possession, Scouras initially avoided direct answers but later claimed that his comments were personal beliefs and not immediate threats. However, the discovery of a Nazi flag, a “ghost gun,” various firearms, ammunition, and a significant amount of cash raised concerns about his intentions and activities. Beverly police took Scouras into custody and he is currently awaiting a dangerousness hearing scheduled for January 13.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online hate speech and illegal possession of firearms. It highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt action by law enforcement agencies to prevent potential acts of violence and protect vulnerable communities from harm.
