Man Sentenced for Stealing Veterans’ Disability Benefits
A shocking case of betrayal and theft has rocked the community as a New Bedford man, Joseph Smith, was recently sentenced to prison for stealing disability benefits intended for a 20-year Marine veteran with ALS. The United States Veterans Benefits Administration issued these benefits to assist the veteran in his time of need, but Smith’s actions have left a stain on the honor and integrity of those who served our country.
The Crime Unveiled
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Smith was charged with the theft of over $450,000 in disability benefits that were meant to support the veteran as he battled Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The victim, a former Marine, had bravely served our country for two decades before being diagnosed with this debilitating illness. The VBA had approved his application for disability benefits, providing him with much-needed financial assistance during his time of struggle.
A Betrayal of Trust
Despite the noble intentions behind these benefits, Smith and others took advantage of the situation for their personal gain. Between 2015 and 2020, while the veteran was hospitalized for ALS, Smith intercepted the monthly VBA checks intended for the victim and deposited them into his own bank accounts. He callously withdrew the funds in cash, using the money for his own expenses instead of supporting the veteran who sacrificed so much for our country.
Justice Served
United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy expressed outrage at Smith’s actions, condemning his betrayal of a veteran who had dedicated 20 years of his life to serving our nation. Levy emphasized that stealing from those who have worn the uniform is not only immoral but also a grave injustice to those who have selflessly defended our freedoms. Smith’s sentence of 23 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, serves as a stark reminder that betraying our veterans will not go unpunished.
